Lionel Messi stance on Barcelona return clear as contract battle begins with PSG

Lionel Messi is out of contract at Paris Saint-Germain next summer and despite Barcelona's public statements on his return, a contract extension appears more likely Lionel Messi's contract at PSG expires next year Lionel Messi has had no contact with Barcelona over a possible return to the club with Paris Saint-Germain hopeful of extending his contract. Messi joined PSG on a two-year contract a year ago from the Catalan giants as a free agent, but Barca’s economic vice president Eduard Romeu has recently suggested that a sensational return to the Camp Nou for the Argentine would be possible. Romeu’s comments followed similar endorsements from Barca boss Xavi Hernandez and, notably, club president Joan Laporta. They have all talked up the possibility of a sensational return to the club for Messi, but this public stance appears to be at odds with their approach behind the scenes. As things stand, nobody from Barcelona has made contact with Messi over the possibility of a return a...

From Haaland to Gordon: what happened to Next Generation 2017?

Talent spotting in football can be a brutal and precarious business. There are so many pitfalls on the way and a player who is outstanding at 16 may not make it for a variety of reasons: loss of form and/or confidence, injuries and a host of personal reasons. Every now and then, however, a player comes through who is so good that he or she seems destined to make it to the top. Erling Haaland – or Erling Braut Håland as he was known back then – is one of them. Of course, a serious injury could have derailed his career but he was one of those kids who stand out from an early age. Haaland was part of our Next Generation worldwide pick in 2017 and, as we look at how the players have got on in the past five years, he is the outstanding name on the list. Some would say he is the best player in the world (although that is a different discussion). In an excellent piece for The Coaches’ Voices, Alf Ingve Berntsen, Haaland’s first coach at Bryne in Norway, pointed out that the environment the pl...

Barcelona suffer quadruple injury blow over international break

Barcelona have suffered a mammoth four injuries in the most recent set of international fixtures, with the club confirming the severity of two of them. All of Memphis Depay, Frenkie de Jong, Jules Kounde and Ronald Araujo have picked up knocks playing for their countries, and it is the defensive duo that appear to have suffered the most. “Tests on Saturday morning have confirmed that Jules Kounde has a biceps femoris injury in his left hamstring. As a result he is unavailable for selection until he recovers, an official statement read. Test were also conducted on Ronald Araujo and he has an avulsion fracture of the adductor longus tendon in his right thigh. He too is going to be out of action until the injury heals”, they add. There are suggestions that Kounde, who suffered his injury in the first half of Les Blues clash with Austria, could be out for as long as a month with his injury, which will come as a major blow both to the Frenchman and the Catalan giants...

Italy vs England LIVE: Nations League result, final score and reaction as Azzurri win to relegate England

England seek to avoid relegation in the Nations League as they take on Italy at the San Siro tonight. After damaging defeats to Hungary in June, as well as draws against Italy and Germany, the Three Lions come into the international break bottom of Group 3 on just two points. They are three points behind tonight’s opponents and a loss this evening means Gareth Southgate’s men will be relegated to League B. Adding to the equation is the fact that these two Nations League matches – England also play Germany on Monday night – are the last opportunities for Southgate to get a feel for his squad before the World Cup kicks off in Qatar later this year. The line-up that the England boss decides to go with this evening will be a display of his priorities as a strong team of experienced first choice picks would show the value he places on being in the top tier of the Nations League. On the other hand, with only two games to go until the World Cup, Southgate may decide to give game time to the p...
